Racism and ignorance clearly evident in our society, as experienced by my friend’s sister. This is what her potential dorm roommate, whom she had never met or talked to before, tweeted about her.

"Today I googled my last name and found this as one of the search results. Apparently, just by looking at my profile picture, I am Indian and I can barely speak english. This, my friends, is a prime example of racial profiling. I am an American citizen. I was born in Houston, Texas. My roots are not from India but from Africa. My parents are Algerian. I am Algerian American. English is my primary language and it is a struggle for me to speak my parent’s native tongue. My name is pronounced exactly as it is spelled. I wear a hijab (a head covering), and not a niqab ( a facial covering that excludes the eyes) though I do admire, respect, and find the beauty in all those who do choose to wear the niqab. But this girl is right, I probably would have had a heart attack living with a person who could not, and refused to, respect me and my beliefs. I can only thank God for an opening of a single room shortly after they assigned this roommate, way before I knew she had posted any of this. Alhamdullilah. I also thank God for being born in Houston, one of the most multicultural cities in the United States, and not experiencing racism like this everyday of my life.
Sunday is my move in day and the start of my college career. This can be nothing but a good sign for the years to come, inshaAllah.
In conclusion, I urge everyone, please, don’t judge a person by their appearances. Racism exists in this nation because we continue to do so. We have to look beyond the covers of appearances and read the texts of their characters. Stand with me and ‪#‎stopracism‬.”

She should be banned from life

    this is so fucked up

Here’s what she had to say about her new roommate

OMG SHE DOES NOT QUIT THOUGH

    1. SHE ALSO CANNOT SPELL. FFS.

    2. SHE IS NOT EVEN OLD ENOUGH TO PURCHASE ALCOHOL AND IS CONSTANTLY ASKING PPL TO LET THEM SELL THEIR IDS TO HER.

  • Confession: Growing up, John Stewart was my favorite superhero because he was black. When I first saw him I was so amazed and I thought “wow he looks like me”. I’m Korean. It was the first time I had ever seen a superhero or a significant character of color in my life. The fact that he wasn’t white made me feel connected to him.

I grew up around white people and white friends, and I always felt out of place with my weird smelling food and abusive parents. So when I saw John Stewart, I didn’t think we looked the same because he was black or because I was Asian—it’s because he also looked different

POC representation is so important you guys, and even casting more black people means a lot to kids that aren’t black. Of course I do want more Asian casting but John Stewart meant a lot to me, and if you ask most people, they will tell you that he is also their favorite Green Lantern.

John Stewart was an American soldier veteran turned superhero. He was never defined or boxed in by the color of his skin and was respected and treated like every other superhero. He was sometimes smarter and more skilled in tactics than most of the Justice League. This guy was more poster boy for America than Superman or any other Green Lantern.

And still Hollywood refuses to make his movie and go with Hal Jordan even after that tragedy train wreck with Ryan Reynolds.

The image above was created from gathering all of the significant named characters from released Marvel Studios movies as documented on the Marvel Movies wikia.

It’s pretty sad. As you can see, only 22% of the characters are women and half of them are love interests. There are over twice as many supporting characters who are men than women (and none of them function as love interests like the women do.) 84% of the characters are white.

    • 60% of the characters are white men, including all the main characters
    • 77%of the characters are men
    • 76% of the men are white
    • 81% of the characters (both genders) are white
    • All of the women are white
    • Allof the characters of color are men
    • None of the characters are women of color

Out of all the films, Thor probably does the best in introducing diverse side characters. Natalie Portman and Kat Denning’s characters pass the Bechdel test within the first five minutes, and some of the Asgardians are played by people of color including Idris Elba’s Heimdall and Tabano Asano’s Hogun. Four white women characters are introduced instead of the other films’ average of one or two. But even then, there’s no question that the main characters of the film are Thor and his brother Loki.

Marvel is working off of decades of existing properties that for years solely focused on white men and a the demographic market of white men. So it makes sense that many of the films would have an abundance of white male characters. Beyond ratios, what doesn’t make sense is that even in the comics there is also an abundance of characters of color, etc. that they are ignoring or underutilizing. There are already five completed films where the titular character is a white man, with more to come. There are no films in the works where the titular character is a person of color or a woman.

Women made up at least 40% of the audience of The Avengers, yet only one out of the six Avengers–Black Widow–was a woman. Women also made up 40% of attendees at this year’s ComicCon. Why, given the scarcity of female heroic leads in the existing Marvel films, did Marvel choose to announce the addition of several more male characters but only one new female character?

    This list needs updating!

But can I add, that yes, there are other superheroes of color but they’re not being made because they sort of don’t fit into what they’re going for. The only colored super heroes I could think of that already exist and would fit is Luke Cage and Black Panther. Luke Cage is officially coming, headlining his own show, and Kevin Feige confirmed that they’re currently writing Black Panther. And even then, these are characters that are like the C team and some casual Marvel fans don’t even know.

I think DC has WAY more to work with in terms of colored characters if they’d just hurry the fuck up already.
